Snow Mold What To Do

Snow Mold Picture

Does your lawn have big yellow spots?

If so your lawn has what is called Snow Mold. Listed below is some information on this matter. You are not alone when it comes to this problem. Listed below is an explanation, treatment and my recommendations.

Snow Mold fungus is a lawn fungus that works under the snow cover. You probably won’t know you have it until the snow starts to melt in the spring. Snow Mold lawn fungus becomes problematic when snow cover is prolonged. Snow Mold lawn fungus can take hold when a wet, deep snow falls on unfrozen ground.

Unfortunately, we don’t have control over when the first snow falls on our lawn or how long it will stay. The fungus lives for years in the thatch and soil, but is mostly never detected due to the weather in our area not being conducive to its growth.

Treatment of Snow Mold is relatively easy and may actually recover on its own. To encourage recovery, rake the infected area to encourage air circulation. Spring application of a fungicide is mostly ineffective; it should be applied in the fall and before the snow cover is expected. If there is extensive damage from the mold, it may be necessary to reseed or sod the infected area.

My recommendations for your lawn is raking the entire lawn along with a cleanup, core aeration, over seeding and a starter fertilizer application in addition to your regular lawn treatments.
